本书全面深入论述了Talmy静态事件的概念化及其表征类型，提出“空间静态事件中的认知叠加系统”理论，并通过实证方法，支持语言关于空间构建具有普遍性之说。

本书采用定性和定量相结合的方法，揭示了两种语言语义表征的大量相似性，这种相似性有其共同的认知基础。作者也发现了英汉两种语言在表征上的一些差异，如英语受访者更注重主事件发生之前的副事件，而汉语受访者更强调主事件的后续事件。这对我们认知空间位置词的共性和类型都有启发。
