    托克维尔看到了在西方，民主趋势的势不可挡，看到了人类社会逐步走向身份平等的倾向，他的目标是考察民主在美国的表现，并比较为何与欧洲不同。他发现三个因素成就了美国的民主：自然条件、法律制度、民情，并指出民情最重要，法律制度次之，自然条件位列最后。
