立足于中国政治、经济和环境变迁的宏大背景，本书考察了一个内蒙古村落妇女和男性数十年的日常环境经历及由此引致的生态环境变迁。其主要内容涉及她/他们在日常生活中如何利用草原、土地、树木和水等自然资源，从事农田劳作及改造和征服自然的活动。基于民族志的田野调查，本书系统探究了这个塞外小村不同性别、族裔、年龄、婚姻、贫富与流动状态的村民，在生产生活中使用、管理和争夺自然资源的异质性经历及国家、市场、社区和家庭等制度流变，如何型塑妇女和男性获得、管理和控制环境资源进而影响当地的生态景观。它从一个微观视角生动地折射了既往半个多世纪西部中国的乡村发展历程和发展模式。
